A side slab is the lining unit that forms the sides of a precast drainage channel. Laid against the banks of an excavated drain, one course each side of an invert block, the slabs retain the soil, stop the banks collapsing into the flow, and hold the channel to the section the engineer designed.
A drain lined only in the base keeps losing its banks. Each storm takes a little more soil, the section widens, the flow slows, silt drops out, and before long the drain has to be re-excavated rather than cleared.
Side slabs go in wherever an open channel has to keep its shape: longitudinal road drains, estate and access road verges, institutional compounds, industrial yards, and the approaches to culvert headwalls. They are also laid to protect short lengths of bank at an outfall, where discharging water would otherwise scour the ground away.

Trim the bank to the batter on the drawing before any slab is set. A slab bedded against loose spoil will move. Lay from the downstream end, butted close, each slab bearing on the bedding below and against the invert block at its toe.
Backfill behind the slabs in compacted layers as the work rises. Road drawings commonly show the slabs bedded on concrete, with the class and thickness given on the contract drawing, and specifications for precast units of this kind often reference BS 368. Specify against the standard named in your own documents and we will quote to it.

Yes, for bank protection, outfall aprons and short lengths of scoured verge. For a fully lined channel they are laid with invert blocks, which form the base the water runs along.
At the standard 610 mm length, a metre of channel takes about 1.6 slabs per side, so roughly 3.3 slabs per metre of fully lined drain before an allowance for cuts and breakages. Send us the length of the run and we will work out the count.
No. Paving slabs are made to be walked on and laid flat on a bed. A side slab is a lining unit for a drainage channel and is set on edge against a bank.
