About this product

What concrete pipes are used for

A precast concrete pipe does one of two jobs. As a culvert it carries a drain or a watercourse beneath something that crosses it: a road, a plot entrance, a farm track or an estate access. As a buried drainage run it collects surface water and takes it to an outfall where an open channel would be in the way or unsafe.

Concrete is specified for this work because the pipe is rigid, heavy enough to stay where it is laid, and strong enough to carry the fill and the traffic above it. Laid on a proper bed, it outlasts the road over it.

Jointing

Two joint types cover most work. An ogee joint, also called a rebated joint, is the usual choice for surface water and land drainage: the pipe ends are rebated so that one seats into the next. A spigot and socket joint, where the plain end of one pipe enters the socket of the next, is used where a sealed or flexible joint is wanted, typically on sewers and on runs that must not leak.

Tell us which your specification calls for when you enquire. It governs the pipe and the way the run is laid.

Standards

Precast concrete pipes for drainage, sewerage and culverts in Kenya are specified against KS 548. Road and water contracts sometimes name the East African or British equivalents instead, and set a class for the loading the pipe has to carry. Tell us the standard and class your drawings call for and we will quote against it.

Bedding and installation

A concrete pipe is only as good as what it sits on. Excavate the trench to the designed level and lay the pipe on a prepared bed rather than on the trench bottom. Granular bedding is the common method, with a compacted layer beneath the pipe shaped so the barrel bears evenly along its length. A concrete cradle is used where cover is shallow or loading is heavy.

Work from the downstream end upwards and lay socket ends facing upstream. Check line and fall as each pipe goes in, joint it before the next is brought up, then backfill evenly on both sides in compacted layers so the pipe is not pushed out of line. Where a run passes under a carriageway, the depth of cover and the backfill are set by the engineer.

Delivery

Made at our Ngong factory. Collection from the yard or delivery by the load across Nairobi and Kajiado. Larger diameters are heavy, so tell us the size and quantity and we will advise on offloading.

Common questions

What is the difference between a culvert and a drainage pipe?

The product is the same. A culvert is a pipe carrying water beneath a crossing; a drainage run is a pipe carrying water along a route. What changes is the depth of cover, the loading, and therefore the class of pipe and the bedding it needs.

Which diameter do I need for a plot entrance?

It depends on the flow the drain carries and the depth available, so it is a question for your engineer, or for us with the site details. The pipe has to pass at least what the roadside drain already carries, or water backs up across the neighbouring plots.

Can you supply bends and fittings?

Tell us what the run needs and we will confirm what we can make against your drawing.
