A gate pillar finished square at the top looks unfinished and lets water into the masonry. A pillar cap closes it, oversails slightly so rain drips clear, and gives the entrance a deliberate finish.
Size the cap to the pillar so it oversails on every face. A raised cap gives more presence on a tall pillar.
